Check in, unwind, and a have restful sleep. Your Sri Lankan family adventure starts tomorrow.
DAY 02 NEGOMBO
Highlights
After your long flight, enjoy a slow and restful morning. Ease into the tropical rhythm with a leisurely breakfast, a swim in the pool, or simply relax in the garden with a cup of Ceylon tea.
By late morning, your chauffeur will take you on a gentle outing to explore the Muthurajawela Wetlands, a peaceful ecosystem of mangroves and marshes. A boat safari here is a quiet adventure — gliding through the waterways, you may spot colourful kingfishers, water monitors, monkeys, and the occasional crocodile. It’s an easy introduction to Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and a hit with children and nature lovers alike.
In the evening, hop aboard a tuk tuk and explore the lively streets of Negombo town — a coastal hub with colonial charm, bustling markets, and a long-standing fishing culture. Dutch-era canals crisscross the town, and the beachside promenade often comes alive with locals and street food vendors.
Option to travel:
If you’re feeling refreshed and ready to begin your journey, you might choose to check out this afternoon and begin your scenic drive north toward Wilpattu National Park.
DAY 03 NEGOMBO - WILPATTU
Highlights
After a slow and easy morning at Villa Hundira and a good breakfast, it’s time to head north to Wilpattu National Park — Sri Lanka’s largest and one of its most beautiful wildlife reserves. The drive takes around 3.5 to 4 hours, with plenty to see along the way — little towns, roadside fruit stalls, coconut plantations, and wide-open countryside.
You’ll arrive by early afternoon at Leopard Trails Wilpattu, a family-friendly tented camp just outside the park. It’s a great mix of adventure and comfort — spacious canvas tents, great food, and friendly staff who make kids feel right at home. Your tent even has a small private plunge pool — perfect for cooling off after the drive.
After lunch and a short rest, it’s time for your first evening safari. This is often the best time to spot wildlife as the animals become more active in the cooler hours. With your guide and driver leading the way, you’ll head into the park — keep your eyes peeled for leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, and maybe even an owl waking up for the night.
Back at camp, a warm shower and a tasty dinner await. Then it’s time to relax under the stars and get ready for another exciting day tomorrow.
DAY 04 WILPATTU
Highlights
It’s an early start today — but well worth it. At dawn, you’ll set off into Wilpattu National Park while the forest is still cool and peaceful. This is one of the best times to explore the park, as the animals begin to stir and the jungle slowly comes alive.
You might hear the calls of peacocks, spot the gentle movements of spotted deer, or see monkeys playing in the treetops. If you’re lucky, you may even glimpse a leopard — known locally as diwiya or kotiya — stretched out on a sand mound or walking along the track, enjoying the warmth of the rising sun.
The soft morning light creates a magical setting — perfect for photos and quiet moments as your guide helps you look and listen for wildlife all around.
After your safari, return to camp for a hearty breakfast and lunch, then enjoy some quiet time. Rest in the shade, take a dip in your plunge pool, or simply relax and listen to the sounds of the forest.
Later in the afternoon, head out with the camp naturalist for a guided bush walk in the area surrounding the lodge. It’s a lovely way to explore the landscape on foot, especially for kids who enjoy spotting birds and insects. You may see flocks of Malabar pied hornbills, flashes of bright yellow from the Black-hooded Oriole, flameback woodpeckers, owls, or eagles high in the canopy.
Return to camp as the sun sets for a relaxed dinner and one more night close to nature.
DAY 05 WILPATTU - ANURADHAPURA - SIGIRIYA
Highlights
After breakfast, you’ll check out and take a short drive to Anuradhapura — one of Sri Lanka’s most important ancient cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the cool of the morning, explore the grand stupas, peaceful monasteries, and sacred sites that date back over 2,000 years. The scale and serenity of places like Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanarama, and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree (said to be the oldest historically documented tree in the world) are impressive, even for younger travellers. It’s a gentle and fascinating step back in time.
From Anuradhapura, your journey continues toward your next stay — a quiet eco-lodge tucked into the dry zone wilderness near a lake. If you’re staying at Kuwera Eco Lodge, you’ll find it peaceful and refreshingly down to earth, with open-air dining, simple comforts, and rooms designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. It’s a lovely spot for families who enjoy being close to nature without compromising on warmth and hospitality.
Evening is for unwinding. Enjoy a boat ride across the lake, perfect for birdwatching and soaking in the sunset. Keep an eye out for kingfishers, herons, cormorants, and maybe even a shy mongoose along the shore. It’s a calm way to end the day and reflect on all you’ve seen.
You can opt to have dinner at your lodge, or head out for a more casual evening — your chauffeur will be glad to take you into town for a relaxed meal at a local restaurant.
DAY 06 SIGIRIYA
Highlights
Today is a slower-paced day designed to enjoy the beauty and rhythm of life around Sigiriya without too much travel.
In the morning, join a local guide for a relaxed cycling tour along the gravel backroads of Sigiriya. Ride past shimmering lakes, lush paddy fields, and chena farms, catching glimpses of daily village life. Along the way, keep an eye out for birds and playful monkeys in the trees — it’s a peaceful and immersive way to connect with the landscape.
Later in the morning, step into a local home for a hands-on cooking class. Pick fresh ingredients from the garden, learn to prepare traditional Sri Lankan curries, and cook over a firewood stove. It’s a warm, friendly experience that gives you a real taste of local culture — and ends with a delicious home-cooked lunch you’ve helped create.
In the afternoon, climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress in time for sunset. Rising nearly 200 metres above the surrounding forest, this ancient citadel was built by a king over 1,500 years ago. Admire the lion-shaped entrance, intricate frescoes, symmetrical water gardens, and the spectacular views from the top.
The golden light, cooler breeze, and dramatic scenery make sunset a magical time to visit — plus, it’s usually less crowded than the morning. That said, if you prefer cooler temperatures, an early morning climb is also possible (though typically busier).
DAY 07 SIGIRIYA
Highlights
Start the day early with a sunrise climb to Pidurangala Rock. It’s a short, steep hike that rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and Sigiriya Rock glowing in the morning light. It’s a peaceful, magical moment — well worth the early start.
After returning to your hotel, enjoy a well-earned rest. Spend the late morning and early afternoon unwinding — relax by the pool, find a shady spot to read, or simply take it slow and escape the midday heat.
In the late afternoon, head out for a safari in Minneriya National Park, one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants. During the dry season, large herds gather around the park’s ancient tank (reservoir), making for a thrilling wildlife experience. Keep your eyes peeled for elephants, birds, and maybe even a leopard or two among the forest and open grasslands.
DAY 08 SIGIRIYA - KANDY
Highlights
After breakfast, begin your journey south toward Kandy. On the way, stop to explore the Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest, best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Inside, you’ll discover five ancient caves filled with over 150 Buddha statues and beautifully preserved murals that date back more than 2,000 years.
By afternoon, you’ll arrive in Kandy, the island’s cultural capital nestled among green hills. Our recommended stays here are either Rivora Heights, a peaceful hilltop retreat just outside the city with sweeping views and modern comforts, or Hanthana House, a charming guesthouse tucked into the cool hills above Kandy, known for its warm hospitality and delicious home-cooked meals.
In the evening, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist temple. Set beside Kandy Lake, this revered shrine houses a sacred tooth of the Buddha. During the evening puja (ceremonial offering), you’ll experience rhythmic drumming, fragrant incense, and devotion-filled rituals — a moving insight into local spiritual life.
DAY 09 KANDY
Highlights
Today is yours to explore Kandy at your own pace — a day to slow down, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy the beauty of this hill-country city.
In the morning, join a local guide for a walk through Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, also known as the King’s Garden. Just above the city, this peaceful forest reserve was once the private gardens of Kandyan royalty. Stroll along shaded trails surrounded by towering trees, tangled vines, and birdsong — a cool, green escape from the city below.
In the evening, take time to explore Kandy town. Stroll past the scenic lake, browse the local markets and small boutiques, and stop to admire the street flower vendors offering vibrant lotus blooms and temple garlands — a simple but beautiful slice of local life.
You’ll feel the gentle rhythm of Kandy as the city winds down for the night.
Day 10 KANDY - ELLA
Highlights
Leave early after breakfast to begin your journey from Kandy to Ella — a day filled with ever-changing landscapes and one of the most scenic train rides in the world.
Your morning starts with a drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya (approx. 2.5 to 3 hours), winding through misty mountains, tea plantations, and lush countryside. Along the way, you’ll pass through the cool highlands of Nuwara Eliya, where you’ll stop to enjoy lunch at a local café or colonial-style restaurant.
After lunch, continue to Nanu Oya Station and board the train to Ella — a slow and scenic 3.5-hour ride that weaves through tunnels, tea fields, waterfalls, and dramatic valleys. This iconic journey is a true highlight of Sri Lanka’s hill country.
Arrive in Ella, a relaxed mountain town surrounded by forested peaks and endless views.
Spend the rest of the day at your own pace. Enjoy a quiet evening at your hotel or take a short walk if you feel up to it:
-
Nine Arch Bridge – A 1.3 km return walk to one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed railway bridges.
-
Little Adam’s Peak – A 1.4 km return trail with sweeping views, especially lovely at sunset.
Day 11 ELLA
Highlights
Today is all about experiencing Sri Lanka’s hill country on foot — through one of its most scenic sections of the Pekoe Trail.
In the morning, meet your trekking guide and set off on a short drive to Makulella, the starting point of Pekoe Trail Stage 15. This 10 km trail winds its way through misty tea plantations, forest patches, quiet lanes, and open hilltop views — offering a peaceful and immersive way to explore the Ella region on foot. The trek typically takes between 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace.
Along the way, enjoy tea and refreshments provided by your guide, and take time to soak in the stunning scenery and local life.
You’ll finish the walk at a village home, where a freshly prepared home-cooked lunch awaits — a warm and authentic reward after your morning in the hills.
After lunch, take a short tuk tuk ride back to your hotel, with the rest of the afternoon free to relax and unwind.
DAY 12 ELLA - YALA
Highlights
After breakfast, leave the cool highlands behind and head south towards the dry lowlands of the south-east. Along the way, enjoy the changing scenery as you pass through forests, farmland, and dry scrub jungle — a striking contrast to the lush green hills you’re leaving behind.
Stop to visit the Buduruwagala Rock Statues — a remarkable archaeological site featuring seven ancient Buddhist figures carved into a cliff face, the tallest standing over 15 metres high.
Continue to your accommodation near Yala, where you’ll stay at one of our recommended lodges:
-
Tranquil Wild — a stylish and comfortable eco-lodge blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings, offering modern amenities with easy access to the park.
-
Yakaduru Yala — a rustic and authentic wilderness camp set deep in the bush, perfect for those seeking an intimate, off-the-beaten-path safari experience.
In the late afternoon, embark on a safari drive through Yala or Lunugamwehera National Park. Watch for elephants, crocodiles, spotted deer, peacocks, and possibly even a leopard or sloth bear — all set against a backdrop of reservoirs, woodlands, and open plains.
Return to your lodge in the evening and relax under the stars.
DAY 13 YALA
Highlights
This morning, you have the option to head back into the park for another safari, giving you another chance to spot wildlife in the golden morning light — ideal for photography and quieter sightings.
Alternatively, for a slower pace, visit a local farm to learn about the traditional curd-making process. This thick, creamy buffalo milk curd is a southern Sri Lankan staple, often enjoyed with treacle. You’ll see how it’s prepared using time-honoured methods, and of course, get a chance to taste it fresh.
In the evening, unwind with a peaceful boat ride on a nearby lake or reservoir. Watch the sunset over the water, listen to the birds settling in for the night, and soak in the stillness of the wild.
Return to your lodge for a final night in the bush.
DAY 14 YALA - SOUTH COAST
Highlights
After breakfast, leave the wilds of Yala behind and make your way to Sri Lanka’s southern coast — where golden beaches, ocean breezes, and a slower rhythm await.
We recommend staying at one of our handpicked coastal retreats:
-
Swell Shacks – Matara: A collection of eco-chic beach shacks just steps from the ocean. Think barefoot luxury, surf vibes, and warm hospitality — perfect for those wanting a stylish but relaxed stay.
-
The Slow Vegan Hotel – Mirissa: A calm and conscious hideaway that blends sustainability with comfort. Plant-based cuisine, peaceful design, and a short walk to the beach make it ideal for mindful travellers.
On arrival at your hotel, it’s time to say goodbye to your chauffeur — the friendly face who’s looked after you throughout your journey across Sri Lanka. From here on, your days are your own.
Settle in and enjoy the coast at your own pace. These are leisurely, open days — perfect for spontaneous plans. You might swim, read under a palm tree, explore a local café, or simply do nothing at all.
DAY 15 - 17 SOUTH COAST
Highlights
These next few days are completely yours — restful, unscheduled, and free to shape however you like.
DAY 18 SOUTH COAST - GALLE FORT
Highlights
Today, make your way from Mirissa to Galle, a short and scenic journey along the southern coastline. You can choose to travel by locally hired van, tuk-tuk, or even local buses — offering a fun and flexible way to experience the region.
Note: Transportation today is not included in your main quote — it will be paid locally. I’ll help coordinate the details with you closer to the day, based on your preferred travel style.
Once in Galle, spend the day exploring Galle Fort at your own pace. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a beautifully preserved colonial-era town, full of charm and atmosphere. Meander through narrow streets lined with cafés, boutiques, and historic buildings, or walk the ramparts and enjoy the coastal breeze.
In the evening, you have two special options to deepen your experience:
-
Take a guided cycling tour through the Fort and Old Town, gliding through its lanes and hidden corners as the golden light sets in.
-
Or, opt for a historian-led walking tour of Galle Fort, uncovering stories of traders, colonial powers, and local life through the centuries.
Return to your accommodation for a relaxing night, with the sea never far away.
DAY 19 GALLE FORT - AIRPORT
Highlights
Enjoy a slow, restful morning at your hotel — perhaps a final swim, a walk along the coast, or simply soaking in the last of the island’s atmosphere.
Later, take time to explore Galle Fort at your own pace. Stroll the ramparts, browse artisan boutiques, or settle in at a favourite café for a final cup of Ceylon tea — a gentle, unhurried way to wrap up your journey.
Most flights to Australia depart around midnight, so you’ll need to arrive at the airport by approximately 9:30 PM. To ensure your comfort, we’ve included an extended checkout at your hotel, so you’ll have time and space to relax, freshen up, and prepare for your flight.
In the evening, your private van and chauffeur will come to collect you for the transfer to Colombo Airport — a final leg of the journey with the same friendly service you’ve had throughout.
It’s time to say goodbye — but we hope it’s more of a “see you again soon.”
